Roumors and reality rudely awakend by El Nino.

The "roumor" is that Abel is making a special reel for the May 1st. Ventura event.  What is reality; is that Abel is our first official sponsor.  Thanks Jeff for being part of this event.  Is the Abel reel for the raffle a fish print or De Young, T. Borski or maybe a J. Prosek finished reel.  Most likely not, but it is still fun to dream, anyways it's an Abel what more can you want!

Well El Nino has put his mark on our fish days.  For most guys with full time jobs; this season has been a story of rained out weekends.  It seems every weekend since Feb. there is rain coming, or wind or big surf.  The last two weekends we had all three come ashore together.  Now we got the spring winds to match the minus tide afternoons.  For those who have been able to get out or brave the conditions; it has been fair fishing at best.  Some large spawner Barred Surf Perch are mixed in with the more ready to hit a fly typical palm sized models.  Some nicer yellowfin croakers have been landed too, but you got to move a lot to find them.  Otherwise you will most like end up catching the smaller models.  There are lots of great structure up and down the OC beaches.  Now we just need to weather and water to settle down.  Then things are looking good for a great time of catching.

Once again the ONE SURF FLY BEACH CLASSIC is on this spring.

Well here we go again.  Right behind the fly shop Artful Angler; we will have a multitude of fly fishing surf anglers battling for friendly bragging rights.  There are rumors of a fly fishing surf bum refugee camp that may get started in front of the Artful Angler.  I hope Eric locks his doors, and keeps an eye on them.  You can never really trust those guys from The OC.

Well since the One Surf Fly event ended my day job caught up to me.  With this week being the final week of school; things have gotten really busy.  Now that I have a gap in time, I can quickly post up the results.

A Recap of the One Surf Fly Huntington Beach and A Big Thank You

Well boys it was crazy to see that many fly fishermen in the surf.  I swore I was on the Owens on opening day.  The turn out was incredible.  It was way bigger than what Al and I could have imagined.  Actually I want to thank Kristina for shooting all of the pictures, since Jorge was fishing the event.  She was a trooper getting on her waders, and getting in with the anglers to get the shot.  She took some great shots too.  We had a few guys still getting their sea legs, but there are a few who could be considered the wet seal of the event.  I think everyone made a new friend as I did for sure.  It as also great to see friends that we do not get to see too often.  That is the best thing about these things is the fellowship and brotherhood that is built (dorky and sappy yes, but true ;)).  Now onto the show...

I would like to give a big thank you to the spotters who helped out.  Without them this would have been near impossible to run.  The spotters did a great job of watching our for joggers and keeping score.  It was great that everyone was able to keep space between each other too.  That is some great sportsmanship.  Lets give a big applause to John Fleisher, Mike Centofani, Matt Warnock, Michelle, and Conway Bowman, Paul Cronin, Steve Peiper, Mike Thompson, Steve Heibert, Bill Smice, Ken F. and the tall guy who I can not remember your name (little did you know you would get recruited. You thought you were just going to take it all in). 

Our donors also stepped up big with the goods for the raffle to help raise money for the TU Southern Chapter's steelhead recovery efforts on the San Mateo Creek in San Clemente.  This is something that is local that we can all take part in.  To imagine a sustainable steelhead run in the OC in the future is still mind boggling.  The raffle was able to generate $1295 for the recovery efforts.  As I mentioned at the raffle, lets all give a big thank you to the manufactures and tiers when you see them at the fly fishing shows for giving such generous donations.  I would like to again personally thank: Abel Reels, Patagonia, Fin Sport, Hareline, Gamakatsu, William Joseph, Drake Fly Fishing Film Tour, WetFly.net, Ken Hanley Pacific Extreme, John William Artist, Outdoor Specialties, Orvis Pasadena, Orvis  Fly Lines, Fishermen’s Spot, Dennis Harper of Harper Custom Rods, Outcast, FlyFishingEuphoria.com.  Also I would like to thank the fly tiers for giving time to tie such beautiful flies that others may use to great effect: Jay Murikoshi, Dave Valdez, Shane Chung, Andy Koczan, Mike Centofani, Matt Warnock, Paul Cronin, Al Quatrocchi , Gary Bulla.

As a recap of the results; Vaughn Podmore won two categories: first fish caught and most fish caught.  The first fish caught was at 7:30 am ( a barred surf perch ) with Craig Crosby following close behind with his caught at 7:36am (a barred surf perch). Vaughn also caught 6 barred surf perch for the most fish.  Those fish were caught on a orange and tan checker fly pattern submitted by Daniel Roberts.  Rich Kanner won the largest fish caught with a 19.5 corbina, caught on a rootbeer and orange surf worm submitted by Kim Zetterburg ( fly in the picture posted by Al ).  The next biggest fish was a 9" barred surf perch also caught by Rich Kanner.  Since the fly that won the most fish and first fish were the same, a runner up was chosen for the most fish fly.  Even at this point we needed another tie breaker to determine the runner up fly.  There were two other anglers who also caught 3 surf perch as well, with Kevin Green and Jim Troyer topping out the list.  Kevin beat out Jim' s 7.5" barred surf perch with a 8.5" barred surf perch.  The fly fished with by Kevin Green was an orange surf clouser fly ( you can get this fly from (www.fishingeuphoria.com) submitted by Ed Rowlett.  

In total we had 62 anglers signed up, with 57 signed in the morning of the 5th to fish.  We pulled 2 anglers to help with the spotting (once again thanks Bill S. and Steve P. ).   A total of 26 clousers, 7 surf rats, 5 surf worms, 4 shrimp pattens, 4 crab patterns, 3 checker surf flies, 2 razzlers, 2 croacker candies and 5 individual patterns were submitted.

We had 27 barred surf perch caught, 2 walleye surf perch caught and 1 corbina caught.  12 anglers were able to catch one barred surf perch, and 1 angler caught a walleye surf perch. 4 anglers were able to catch 2 barred surf perch and 1 angler caught 6 barred surf perch.  Lastly one angler was able to catch the lone corbina.  Two baby corbinas were snagged during the event.

This is the baby corbina that took a ride of its life.  The barb was wrapped around the belly of the fish behind the pectoral fins.  The barb was just barely stuck to the skin.  Below are some action shots of a very laid up Huntingon Beach.

Google Aerial Map of the One Surf Fly Location

The maps above will give you guys an idea of where everything is.  The green box is the free parking area on Bushard and Brookhurst.  Also you can park along Brookhurst from the Bushard intersection to Hamilton.  The shopping center owners are allowing us to use their lot too.  They just ask that you guys park in the outer spots, so their customers can park at the store front spots.  The other free parking in the area is the residential area just behind the strip mall.  the residential area on the other side of the strip mall on Bushard requires a permit (parking tickets here).  Lastly not on the map is the free parking along Sea Shore drive.  This is accessable by entering from PCH via Orange street (1st light south of the PCH / Santa Ana River bridge).

Enter the State Beach at the main enterence on Magnolia and PCH.  After the pay booth/ranger station head south (towards Newport Beach) through the first large lot.  Go around the Brookhurst entrance (closed during the winter time) road into the second large lot.  Park by the bathrooms at the southern end of the 2nd large parking lot marked in the maps by the orange box.

Just a reminder that those who check in first get to pull first from the bag of flies.  We will draw flies no later that 6:45am.  After you have taken your one surf fly you may proceed to the beach to stage for the start.  You can drive to any location along the One Surf Fly tournament beach boundries to your staging point prior to the start.  The southern boundries for the One surf Fly will be the Huntington State Beach side of the Santa Ana River (yes you may fish the Santa Ana River inlet.  You just can not go past the PCH bridge or to the Newport Beach side of the river.).  The Northern boundries is set at lifeguard station #6 (located half way between Magnolia and Brookhurst). 

More stuff for the raffle just keep rollin in.

Jamie and Kristen Lyle of Outdoor Specialties just sent us a box full of Rio fly lines and tippets plus a Sage and a Reddington ball cap. Along with the Sage hat were two Sage humidors, The fly lines just keep coming. Hutch Hutchinson at Orvis sent us two floating lines, with the WF 7 F line being an excellent line for sight casting to those stupid corbinas in the flats on the beaches. Also from Orvis it sounds like we will be getting a pair of sun glasses from the Orvis Pasadena Corporate Store. For the film buff we got sets of free tickets coming our way for the Drake Magazine Fly Fishing Film Tour. They will have 2 sets of 3 tickets waiting for you at will call. Maybe I can talk Drake into throwing in popcorn, candy and drinks. Now that would be cool. Lastly in chatting with Jeremy S. from Outcast he agreed to donate the demo Fat Cat they had on display at the Bob Marriott's Fly Fair. That was truly too cool, as it was to catch up with Jeremy.
